Abstract

Highlighting the drive to eradicate poliomyelitis, the following compares the current initiative to earlier plans to rid the world of smallpox. It then draws attention to the problems associated with keeping, destroying, and monitoring virus stocks as well as those posed by malevolent agents, irresponsible non-government organizations, and imprudent government leaders.
