Abstract
The Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) provided an opportunity to strengthen the role of education in sustainable development. ESD not only looks at formal education but is holistic and includes a larger canvas. This chapter provides an overview of major highlights of integrating ESD in South Asia across formal, non-formal and informal sectors. It gives an account of the contributions by the major players in the region and within the countries to promote ESD. This includes regional and country strategies and programmes that provide the platform for integration of ESD. UNESCO Asia Pacific Bureau, UNESCO New Delhi office, and the UNESCO Commissions had the major task of facilitating DESD through national governments, involvement of NGOs and other key institutions; and capacity building and development of resources for ESD. While providing a generic account of the region, the chapter seeks to capture the uniqueness which the countries of the region bring into their DESD plans and activities.
