Abstract

Garden-Raised Bounty, better known as GRuB, is a community-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization located in Olympia, Washington. GRuB was born in 2001 from the merger of two grassroots programs. The Sister Holly Garden Project, established in 1996 by a group of Evergreen State College students, offered garden-based educational opportunities to youth and seniors. The Kitchen Garden Project was established in 1993 to provide low-income people with productive vegetables gardens. After merging these two projects, GRuB went to work expanding and enhancing these programs to engage hundreds of youth and low-income families in the simple, transformative act of growing and sharing good food. Today, GRuB’s mission is to inspire positive personal and community change by bringing people together around food and agriculture. We fulfill our mission by partnering with youth and people with low incomes to create empowering individual and community food solutions, and by offering tools and trainings to build a just and sustainable food system. Our work bridges the fields of agriculture, education, hunger-relief, leadership development, health care, and sustainability.
