Abstract

Durability specification and control of concrete should be based on performance measures. These show intrinsic spatial variability, and measurements are always subject to error. Specifications should take these variations into account by relying on statistical methods, both for estimating “true values” of durability indices and for deciding about conformity with prespecified limits of acceptability. This chapter introduces the statistical foundations of such procedures. It also describes the analysis of interlaboratory studies, which help to understand the precision of measurements. Finally, statistical regression methods are discussed, since studying relations between different quantities is a prominent theme throughout the book.
