Abstract

With the rapid development in the society and economy in China, environmental pollution is getting more and more serious. Studies on WQC had not been started in China until 1980s. The research outputs at that time were not mature enough to found the scientific basis for the establishment and amendment of WQS in China. The current in-effect WQS are set by consulting the WQC or WQS in developed countries, which may not be suitable for the protection of aquatic ecosystems in China.
