Abstract
According to the experts now examining the soil which has been laid dry, about seven hundred years ago the Zuiderzee was a freshwater lake. The salinity started to increase only about 1300 A.D. after the sea had gained wider ingress. This is in keeping with the sagas which speak of originally close contact between the Frisians on either side of the now broad waters and with a chronicler, who wrote that the water around the island of Marken was still fresh in 1240.
