Foraminiferal Faunas from Deep-Sea Sediments in the Gulf of Guinea

  • Chapter
The Deep-Sea Canyons in the Gulf of Guinea Near Fernando Póo

Summary

Sediment cores taken during a deep-sea geological expedition in the Gulf of Guinea have been studied micropalaeontologically.

The fine-grained sediments below 1350 m sea depth contain a foraminiferal fauna, consisting of over 90% planktonic forms, accompanied by benthonic species characteristic of the Recent abyssal environments above the calcium carbonate compensation level.

Sandy layers bearing a high percentage of displaced shallow-water benthonic Foraminifera are often intercalated in these fine sediments in the submarine canyons and fan deposits at the canyon head.

Moreover, it became apparent that a thin blanket of Recent/ Holocene sediments covers Pleistocene deposits of the same environment. Only one core penetrated into Pliocene strata.
