Abstract
In fig. 1 the system1) is reproduced. The magnet has to be placed vertically as rotations around a vertical axis occur. We use a Carpentier magnet, watercooled at the upper and lower ends of the coils. The maximum continuous load amounts to 7.5 A, limited by the heating of the coils. The fields, always increasing the current up to the right value, can be reproduced rather well on approaching saturation. The diameter of the iron core is 70 mm, the distance of the pole-pieces 10 mm. The whole apparatus has been placed under a box of cardboard to prevent air currents from disturbing the adjustment.
