Abstract

Intraarticular haemorrhage occurs in all severe cases of haemophilia when the serum level of factor VIII is below 1%. Ali et al. [35], in a study of 210 haemophiliacs, found intraarticular haemorrhages in 196 cases (93%). Favre-Gilly [123] found haemarthrosis in 94% of 130 cases. Haemarthrosis generally appears in the early years of life [124]. Thomas [125] reported ankle haemarthrosis in a 3-month-old infant. In 89% of our own patients the first haemarthroses occurred under the age of 10 years. Lyon-Smith [126] reported a 70% manifestation below 2 years.
