Abstract

There have been many phenomenological treatments of the oath and the curse. Some encyclopedias are excellent for orientation: Hastings, Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics; and Die Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart. There are also a few older monographs, for instance, Rudolf Hirzel’s Der Eid, ein Beitrag zu seiner Geschichte (1902), which is concise and good. There are also many treatments of the oath in particular religions, those of the Greeks, Romans, and Semites (Johs. Pedersen, Der Eid bei den Semiten [1914], 242 pages). I shall only touch on certain points which seem to me to be instructive.
