Abstract

An evaluation of our present understanding and knowledge of the chromospheric spectrum depends heavily upon our concept of the thermodynamical and geometrical properties of the chromosphere. Our knowledge of the spectral properties of the chromosphere still derives largely from observations made at total solar eclipse. Our concepts of geometrical structure, however, derive mainly from observations made outside of eclipse. The spectral and geometrical properties must be combined in order to formulate a meaningful thermodynamical picture of the chromosphere. The thermodynamical picture, in turn, modifies our concepts of the relevant geometrical and spectral properties.
