Comparative Biochemistry of Chlorophyll-Protein Complexes

Abstract

The photosynthetic pigments occur in vivo noncovalently bound to protein, forming two functionally and spectrally distinct classes of pigment-protein complexes: the photochemical reaction center and the light-harvesting complexes (Thornber et al. 1978). By using suitable surfactants and standard protein purification techniques, reaction center and the antennae complexes have been independently purified from many photosynthetic organisms (Gingras 1978; Olson, Thomber 1979; Cogdell 1983).
