Abstract
Taxonomic study of the land and freshwater mollusca of Australia is still far from complete, while their ecology has, as yet, received practically no attention. Only one group, the freshwater mussels, has been studied sufficiently to allow the preparation of a monograph (McMichael & Hiscock, 1958) and even here, one genus is still known from the shells alone. Many species are known from only a few shells from a single locality, and while a number of species have been studied anatomically enabling the probable relationships of the major groups to be established, the true affinities of many genera and species are still unknown. Before accurate zoogeogra-phical conclusions can be reached, it is necessary to have a well established nomenclature, so that the present account is possibly somewhat premature.
