Abstract
By means of starch gel electrophoresis and benzidine stain of pig sera, to which haemoglobin was added prior to electrophoresis, 10 protein components were observed. According to convention the components were designated Hp 1–Hp 10. Grouped variations involving Hp 1, Hp 2 and Hp 3 in the individual sera were observed. Family investigations supported the hypothesis that the polymorphism exhibited was under simple genetic control and determined by 3 allelic genes (Kristjansson, 1961). During later Danish investigations a new component Hp 0 was found. Family investigations comprising pigs of Danish Landrace have supported the hypothesis that the synthesis of Hp 0, Hp 1, Hp 2 and Hp 3 is determined by 4 alleles: Hp0, Hp1, Hp2, and Hp3 with codominant mode of inheritance (Brummerstedt-Hansen et al. 1962 a, b; Hesselholt 1963a, b).
