Abstract

Little is known of the ecology of mural vegetation. The present study, begun in the Netherlands, was later extended to include localities elsewhere in Europe e. g. in Great Britain, Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Italy and W. Germany. In nearly 1,200 sites relevés were made of stands of vegetation on more or less vertical wall surfaces. In addition, vegetation of cracks and joints in paved surfaces (streets, pavements, squares, etc.) was studied in 177 sites, because the communities occurring in this particular habitat often resemble certain types of mural vegetation.
