Abstract

Let us make clear precisely what is the question with which we shall be concerned in this chapter. We are to consider what certain words which are the linguistic equivalents of certain mathematical symbols mean. In order to do this we need to ask two things. First: what sort of thing do we refer to when we ask for the meaning of a word? Second: how do we go about finding out whether or not what the word is said to mean does as a matter of fact occur in the physical world? The second problem seems to me to demand an answer to a question of the form “Are there —?”
