Abstract
In this chapter we shall discuss certain ideas and present facts which can help us to set the stage for multivariate analysis. We shall name possible objectives to be pursued, discuss the advantages of formal methods, as compared to the informal techniques which characterize classical vegetation ecology, and consider a number of decisions that must be made about the problem, variables, sampling design, etc., before the collection and analysis of the data may begin. In the discussions we shall make the point repeatedly that the methodological decisions at different stages in a vegetation study are interrelated.
