Abstract

The batch composition of glazes is normally worked out to contain only water-insoluble ingredients, whether these are the raw materials themselves or prepared frits. These are ground down to the necessary fineness for application of the glaze, normally in a ball mill in presence of water. In order to keep the ground material in suspension there is usually about 5% of raw china clay in the batch. Under particular circumstances this may be replaced by ball clay or by a small quantity of bentonite, or clay may be eliminated in favour of organic adhesives.
