Abstract
In the patrilineal culture of the Chinese, boys are definitely the preferred sex. They receive preferential treatment at home, enjoy many privileges denied to girls and are often given a central position in the familial interaction. They should, in theory, have security and self-respect, which should enable them to develop ego strengths to withstand stresses in their lives.
