Abstract
The young person who leaves home to study or work in a foreign land is in an ironic position. Ordinarily a quite well-adapted person, with achievements great enough to be eligible for study abroad, he/she moves deliberately into a position of stress and personal vulnerability. In the new environment, he/she must learn new and strange ways of doing things in order to continue to function at the accustomed high degree of excellence. Thus by taking on the role and the experience of the stranger in a strange land, the foreign student enters into a kind of voluntary or forced deviance.
