Deviant Marriage Patterns in Chinese Society

Abstract

The basic concerns of anthropology are cross-cultural understanding of other peoples, analyzing other societies and investigating other ways of life. One of the things which confuses attempts to do these things is that as cultural beings we take so many things for granted; we unconsciously assume so very much in every social situation. The things that people take for granted, the assumptions that they make, vary, of course, from society to society. One becomes painfully aware of this when thrown into a new society, or a completely new situation. This is an occupational hazard in anthropology, though anthropologists of course have no monopoly over it. Culture-shock, the disoriented feelings, the sense of free-floating anxiety, that comes of trying to deal day-in and day-out with an unfamiliar language, unfamiliar society, and unfamiliar patterns of social interaction, is a favorite topic of anthropologists who have done field research.
