Abstract

Senescence induced loss in chlorophyll content of leaves is known but no report is available on qualitative changes in the optical behaviour of the pigment due to change in the membrane environment. Thylakoid unstacking and its disorganisation have been studied mostly by electron microscopy but nothing is known about the molecular changes at thylakoid surface during senescence. The present investigation aims at investigating the changes in absorption properties of the pigments. Senescence induced changes in the sensitivity of plastid membranes to proton and heat stresses are probed by exogenous fluorophore.
