Participation of a Lysine-containing Polypeptide in Herbicide Binding at the Acceptor Side of Photosystem II

Summary

The affinity of the Photosystem II herbicides atrazine and bromoxynil is changed by a lysine-specific protease. However, the rapidly turning-over 32 kDa protein labelled by azidoatrazine and lacking lysine is shown not to be attacked by this protease. Therefore, binding of both atrazine and bromoxynil appears to be dependent also on other protein moieties than the 32 kDa polypeptide. This confirms the idea of a. binding environment for quinones and herbicides that consists of a protein complex rather than of a single protein.
