Abstract
In whole plants regions of assimilate production and of assimilate consumption are easily determined. Such source and sink organs are connected by a transport system — the phloem. The utilization of assimilates by the sink will determine the rate of import into the sink organ and may thus also control the rate of CO2 fixation in sources leaves and the production of assimilates.
