Zusammenfassung
In SPE beargumenteerden Chomsky en Halle dat één van de belangrijkste criteria voor het bepalen van de klemtoon in Engelse woorden de vorm van het eind van het woord is, met name de positie daarin van de zogenaamde ‘zware’ lettergrepen. Hierdoor kon bijvoorbeeld de verschillende positie van de hoofdklemtoon in woorden als alúminum, Wiscónsin en diréct verantwoord worden. We hebben dit in Hoofdstuk 3 laten zien.
Generally speaking there are no rules determining which syllable or syllables of polysyllabic English words bear the stress. (D. Jones, Outline of English Phonetics)
