Abstract
By June 3, 1670, Pomponne was back at The Hague,1 where he waited for word that all had gone as planned at Dover. First came Lionne’s hurried report that the “treaty of commerce”—a simple term of camouflage—had been concluded, then, a week later, Louis XIV’s confirmation: “The things of which I spoke to you during the final night at Lille have since been accomplished, to the last letter of my desires.”2 Pomponne was confident that before long he would see “false policies confounded and great ingratitude punished.” Though Madame’s success “will cost me my employment,” he wrote to Lionne, “I will gain by losing.” The Dutch embassy had become an unbearable financial burden: it was “only for rich men.”3
