Abstract
Autonomy and responsibility form the two limbs of a dialectic which helps form our communal ethos. This tension is studied not only as it pertains to medicine but also as it is reflected in other social issues of caring for members of community. In examining this issue, the chapter scrutinizes autonomy and sets out criteria for determining that a decision is or is not an autonomous one. Truth-telling, as it relates to autonomy, is briefly discussed.
