Abstract
The irritable colon syndrome is a very common diagnosis in gastroenterological departments1. It is, however, a diagnosis which is made on the basis of exclusion of all other possible pathology. Unfortunately, to date, colonic motility studies do not appear to be sufficiently specific to be of value in the diagnosis of the irritable colon2,3.
