Abstract
The period 1983–1984 is characterized by a serious and prolonged world shipping crisis. The main cause of the crisis is the reduction of the massive imports of earlier periods by the oil producing countries starting from the Arab countries, and extended to Nigeria and South American countries as these countries saw themselves with reduced funds at best and with heavy debts imperiling not only their own but also the world economy at worse. This reduction of cargoes resulted in excessive tonnage availability and fall in freights and ship values in turn.
