Abstract
Different urban building pattern have an influence on the dispersion of gases which are released within the built-up area. The dispersion cannot be predicted by commonly used simple Gaussian Plume Models. Especially they fail close to the source between obstacles.
Wind tunnel experiments have been performed to determine the distribution of concentrations in the vicinity of the source and the parameters of a so-called semi-empirical model based on a “radius of homogenization” and the lateral plume shift caused by the building pattern. The model combines these data with the Gaussian Plume Model. It uses wind tunnel data close to the source and, by introducing virtual sources, calculates concentrations beyond the radius of homogenization. Some examples are given that are obtained with this procedure.
