Tourism and the Growth of Urban Ethnic Islands

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: The GeoJournal Library ((GEJL,volume 65))

Abstract

Following World War II, many coastal resort areas in southern Europe and the United States, some of which had already gained considerable popularity before the war, experienced a rapid growth in tourist arrivals. Several locations became associated with particular ethnic groups, who migrated to the areas on a temporary basis for a reprieve from northern American and European winters. Before long, however, masses of people, having visited the South on earlier vacations, migrated there on a permanent basis. Some resort communities developed rapidly and began to conform physically and socio-culturally to the dominant immigrant groups. Today, several examples of these tourism-induced urban ethnic islands exist in southern Europe and North America.
