Availability and Potential of Historical Flood Series in the Iberian Peninsula (14th–20th Centuries)

The Use of Historical Data in Natural Hazard Assessments

Part of the book series: Advances in Natural and Technological Hazards Research ((NTHR,volume 17))

Abstract

One of the most frequent natural hazards, and amongst those with greatest economic and social impact in Europe (especially Mediterranean Europe), has been and continues to be floods. Study of the historical documentation and its application in reconstruction of the flood series going back 4 to 6 centuries constitutes a useful line of research, not only for studies of climatic variability but also for prevention of future floods. This paper shows the criteria followed for gathering reliable historical series and the first series gathered. Two examples of application are proposed, concluding with a proposal for the gathering of further series to complete data for Peninsular Spain.
