Abstract
Cyanobacteria are not among the dominant alga-like organisms in the Pantanal, except in isolated water bodies during the dry season, in which blooms of Microcystis aeruginosa (Kützing) Kützing sometimes develop in nutrient-rich waters of warm, shallow pools after large numbers of trapped fishes have died. Species of Oscillatoria may also develop large dark clumps, usually in partially shaded places. Otherwise, the species are represented chiefly by relatively isolated colonies among large numbers of eukaryotic algae.
