Abstract
Several previous chapters have been concerned with the way in which major element compositional data can be put to work in the formulation and testing of petrogenetic hypotheses. Trace elements have not so far been considered in detail because the way in which they are best handled is often substantially different from the treatment for major elements.

Note
B. O. Mysen (Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta, 42, 1253–63, 1978) gives detailed experimental evidence for REE partitioning under mantle conditions. He shows that Henry’s Law breaks down at much lower concentration limits than previously supposed, e.g. approximately 100 times chondritic abundance for Sm in the liquid. Above these levels, K D s increase markedly with REE concentration even at constant P.T. and bulk composition, although the ratio of K Ds for any pair of incompatible elements remains more constant.
