Abstract

There are a number of converging trends in Asia and the Pacific that are of particular significance for the future of urban youth. These include:

  • projections concerning increasing urbanization (Gizewski & Homer-Dixon, 1995);

  • the reported growth in urban poverty (Chapman, Dutt, & Bradnock, 1999);

  • the cyclical patterns of regional economic downturn (ESCAP, 1998).
