Abstract

Energy scenarios emerged as a reaction against macroeconomic forecasts of future energy demand based merely on extrapolation of trends from the past. Numerous problems had appeared when forecasts were extended to periods of several decades and when a standard of living corresponding to that of industrialized countries was assumed for developing countries. The problems encountered were especially those of exhaustion of energy sources and degradation of the environment. A different analytic approach was needed to identify the requirements for sustainable development.
