Application of Extreme Values in Structural Engineering

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 131))

Abstract

Basically, the design process in structural engineering is based on extreme value considerations. In previous times, in which statistical properties of structural loading as well as structural resistances were not recognized, the design procedures have been based on the selection of largest, i.e. “maximum” values of loads and smallest i.e. “minimum” resistances purely on an empirical basis. In modern developments of the theory of structural safety and reliability, loads as well as resistances are dealt with in a scientific, i.e. rational way which implies their modeling by extreme value distributions. This contribution contains various examples of application of extreme value models particularly in the areas of wind-, earthquake- and ocean engineering.
