Simulation Models in Climatology

Part of the book series: Theory and Decision Library ((TDLU,volume 40))

Abstract

During the last two decades there has been an explosion of research and publications dealing with simulation of atmospheric processes. Just a listing of those works would fill the space allotted to this paper. Consequently, the following is a highly selective review of the topic and the reader should refer to the references cited for more details and a more extensive literature list. On the other hand, the coverage is broad and, following the philosophy of the author, encompasses much which would be classified by some as meteorology. That is, he makes no clear distinction between meteorology and climatology and considers these subjects to be part of an integrated continuum. Durst (1951) recognized this in his definition, “The physical problem of synoptic forecasting and climatology is the same, for climate is but the synthesis of weather.” Synthesis of weather in Landsberg’s (1960) definition is “... the collective state of the earth’s atmosphere for a given place within a specified interval of time.” For Lorenz (1975), “Climate may be identified with a set of statistics of an ensemble of many states of the atmosphere.” If we accept these descriptions, a true understanding of climate must of necessity involve the instantaneous states, so frequently we find climatologists involved in studies which are normally classified as meteorology. Geographers, whose interests lie in climatology, are part of the same current research milieu and many are engaged in simulating aspects of the atmosphere. The number has grown substantially since the author’s short survey in 1974 (Rayner, 1974) and currently a non-exhaustive list would include: Arnfield, Bach, Barry, Brazel, Davies, Dozier, Hay, Henderson-Sellers, Hobgood, Lockwood, Outcalt, Parkinson, P. J. Sellers, Suckling, Terjung, Tyson and Williams.
