Abstract

Soon after the STATs were discovered as intracellular signaling mediators of the interferons, these proteins were found to propagate neurotrophic factor signaling in neural cells (1–4). Since then, the study of the biological roles of the STATs and the JAK-STAT signaling pathway in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) has been moving forward at a steady pace. However, there are significant questions that remain to be elucidated in this field. In this chapter, current understanding of the role of the JAK-STAT signaling pathway in the development and function of the CNS will be presented.
