Abstract

Based on the terminologies suggested by Kushner (1, 2), the following definitions were applied to this presentation on acute phase response: Inflammation is the tissue response to injury, acute phase response is the systemic reaction to inflammation, and an acute phase protein (APP) is a gene product whose expression is induced (positive APP) or suppressed (negative APP) during the acute phase reaction. The most prominent effect of the acute phase response in vertebrate species is detected in the increased production of a set of liver-derived plasma proteins, the acute phase plasma proteins. The specificity and large magnitude of induction have promoted the acute phase plasma proteins as the markers par excellence for the inflammatory process in vivo and for the identification of the molecular mode of cytokine signaling and gene regulation in vitro.
