Abstract
There is a common view among the authors in this volume that it is misleading to understand modem medicine simply as a science, as a technology, or as an art. Some ([28], [20], [9], [13], [11], [27], [29]) hold that although medicine embraces all three components, it favors one over the other. Others ([24], [1], [9], [13], [11], [27], [211) hold that medicine is not reducible to these components and that it is “more than the sum of its parts”. This essay shares this latter view and continues the dialogue regarding the complexity of medicine by reflecting on the dynamic interplay among science, technology, and art in modern medicine [3]. Moreover, this essay reflects on the grounds and the limits of the medical profession’s legitimate authority and its obligation toward patients through an analysis of the role of values in medicine.
