Abstract
Runoff events in the Negev result from high intensity rainfall events, which occur there infrequently and obtain variable magnitudes. Owing to the normal deficit in soil moisture, the occurrence frequency of the runoff events is considerably lower than that of the rainfall events. Yet, due to the low vegetative cover of the soil, relatively high discharges are developed when the rainfall intensity exceeds the infiltration capacity. Therefore, for a given exceedence probability, the specific discharge per unit area in the arid region of Israel is higher than that observed in the semi-arid region (Ben-Zvi 1988). In consideration of the high variability and low inter-dependence of the runoff events, we have constructed an event base model that seems suitable for a description of the magnitude and frequency of the events. The present model is a simpler and updated version of a former model (Ben-Zvi, 1982) which was constructed mainly for prediction purposes.
