Sliding Plate and Sliding Cylinder Rheometers

  • Chapter
Rheological Measurement

Abstract

The present review is concerned with rheometers that are particularly advantageous for the generation of large, rapid transient shear deformations in highly viscous, non—Newtonian fluids, viz. sliding plate and sliding cylinder rheometers. Large, rapid deformations are particularly useful for the study of time dependent structural changes and nonlinear viscoelasticity, and a number of material functions have been defined to facilitate the interpretation and presentation of nonlinear viscoelastic data.1 The rheometers described here are thus of particular value in the evaluation of rheologically complex materials that are processed using industrial machinery. Included in this category of materials are molten plastics, elastomers, concentrated polymer solutions, asphalts, bread doughs, and other concentrated suspensions.
