Overview

Five years after the German unification in 1990, the process of environmental rehabilitation in Eastern Germany is in full course and turns out to be one of the crucial elements of harmonizing the living conditions between the formerly divided parts of the country. The successful management of environmental projects is an iterative, multistepped, and multi-level process, depending very much on the organization structure and the integration of private engagement. The authors report on their related experiences as organization and project managers, and point out the importance of the following aspects: land use and regional planning on the large scale, incremental assessment and rehabilitation procedures on the small scale, partial privatization, well adapted to the local boundary conditions, and effective project management for the carriers of public interest and responsibility.
