On the Characterization of the Weak-Strong Distinction

  • Chapter
Quantification in Natural Languages

Part of the book series: Studies in Linguistics and Philosophy ((SLAP,volume 54))

Abstract

Cross-linguistically, the distribution of weak and strong NPs exhibits surprisingly universal patterns which indicates that universal semantic principles must be involved. In addition, syntactic restrictions often seem to play an equally important role.

Section 2 contains material developed in collaboration with Mark Kas (cf. De Hoop and Kas, 1989). This research was supported by the Foundation for Linguistic Research, which is funded by the Dutch organization for research, NWO (grant 300–171–005). Eric Reuland and Henriette de Swart kindly commented upon the manuscript. I would like to thank the editors for their constructive comments and Ale de Boer for checking the English.
