Morphological and Cytological Variations of Japanese Dryopteris Varia Group (Dryopteridaceae)

  • Chapter

Abstract

Morphological and cytological studies were undertaken to examine the taxonomic entities and their variations in six species and one variety of the Dryopteris varia group. Dryopteris saxifraga is distinct from the other agamosporous species in its sexual reproductive manner and its morphological characters, such as scales, texture, shape of leaves, indusia, and spore wall ornamentation. The agamosporous species cannot be segregated clearly from each other by these morphological characters. The cytological results confirmed that each of the agamosporous species consists of diploid and triploid infraspecific cytotypes. The triploids (81% of the examined plants) were dominant to the diploids (19%). D. insularis and its variety D. insularis var. chichisimensis were observed cytologically for the first time. The former was agamosporous diploid (2n=82), and the latter, was agamosporous triploid (2n=123). It may indicate that the intraspecific ploidy is concerned with the morphological variation of the agamosporous species in the D. varia group.
