Abstract
This paper illustrates the problems involved in selecting the petrographical classes to be used in quantitative studies of arenites and proposes criteria whereby the dependence of rock composition on grain size is minimized and a satisfactory separation is obtained between arenaceous components which are either coeval with the deposit (mainly intrabasinal) or else significantly older (mainly extrabasinal).
