Abstract

A series of water quality monitoring systems have been established in Germany in recent years. The German Federal States are responsible for general water resources management and have created an extensive monitoring network for water quality control of ambient waters. Ground water monitoring is presently being installed. Since the Federation is responsible for traffic-related water management needs monitoring networks maintain records of river training measures. Some water quality stations are integrated with international river section commissions such as the International Commissions for the Protection of the Rhine and Elbe. Specific measuring programmes for coastal water quality routinely monitor the North and Baltic Seas using aeroplanes especially equipped with remote sensors.
