Abstract
Twelve species of Limnephilidae were found as larvae in temporary stillwater habitats in Scotland and England. Studies on the life-histories of six of these demonstrated several adaptations associated with colonisation of such habitats. Adults had an ovarian diapause and laid eggs out of water in places where water stood the previous winter. Larvae could remain dormant within the egg-mass for at least 18 weeks, and did not escape until immersed in water. Control experiments suggested that species inhabiting permanent waters do not show these adaptations.
