Summary

Physiological and behavioural adaptations of Stenophylax (Limnephilidae) to temporary waters.

The caddisflies Stenophylax, which live in temporary streams as larvae and pupae, show two kinds of adaptations to the drying up of their environment.

1. Physiological adaptations: embryology may take place during emersion, larval quiescence, respiratory metabolism is adapted to the irregular mode of the streams, pupation may take place in an aerial environment, imaginal ovarian diapause.

2. Behavioural adaptations: oviposition may take place outside water, first instar larvae remain in the mucilaginous mass of the eggs during emersion, larvae hide in the ground when their environment dries up, emerging in the adult form, Stenophylax migrates into the subterranean environment.
